The Lake Tahoe / Reno area offers a
variety of communities to explore. Each is situated around the shore or near Lake Tahoe, the huge, deep
blue and quiet lake that straddles California and Nevada. In addition to the full range of aquatic
activities, the Lake Tahoe area also supports a wide selection of outdoor sports, and is the perfect area
even for the non-sports inclined who may wish just to enjoy one of the more beautiful arrays of mountains,
water and forests on Earth. To help orient newcomers to the area, we have provided brief descriptions
for each of the better known resort areas around the Lake, in clockwise order beginning at the
northeastern shore, but we urge you to take the time to explore some of the lesser known vast areas of
undistracted natural beauty between each of these communities, as well.
Incline Village
Prices are a little higher in this resort community at the northeastern edge of the Lake, but because the
golf courses and beaches in the summer and ski slopes in the winter are less populated, you will experience
more of the natural beauty of the area and see what attracts loyal visitors year after year. The pace is
easier, and even the casinos are quieter around Incline Village than in the more popular cities of the area.
Frank Sinatra and other celebrities have favored the casinos around Incline Village, and some have built
residences in the area hidden away in the hills.

Carson City
A few minutes drive east from the Lake, Nevada’s capital city offers many preserved landmarks of the old
West along the Kit Carson Trail. The capitol building and grounds are always open, and provide excellent
exhibits on the history of Nevada and the pioneer era. The full range of outdoor activities and golf
courses also may be enjoyed around Nevada’s capital, as in all cities around Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe
Heading further south from Carson City, and back towards the Lake, the town of South Lake Tahoe,
surrounded by the area called the South Shore, is located near the Lake’s southeastern edge, and is the
most popular of the Lake Tahoe resort areas. The South Lake Tahoe area has the most active nightlife and
liveliest casinos in the region, and offers the widest selection of tours and guided recreational adventures
of all of the area’s resort towns.
Tahoe City
There is not much civilization between the south and northwestern sides of Lake Tahoe, but plenty of
California scenery to explore and enjoy. Tahoe City is on the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe, and is the
more rugged and natural of the Tahoe resort areas. Surrounded by the Tahoe National Forest and Sierra
Nevada Mountains, Tahoe City provides the best challenge for top skiers, and is perfect for those seeking a
breathtaking encounter with the American wilderness.

Truckee
Heading a few miles straight north from the Lake, the California mountain town of Truckee offers an old
fashioned, pioneer atmosphere with lots of history, authentic Western cuisine and retails goods. A famous
stop along the trail before tackling the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Truckee has become a symbol of the
Western lifestyle, and its residents exhibit the same pioneering free spirit and appetite for fun and
adventure that drove their ancestors.
Reno
Reno is across the Nevada state line and northeast of Truckee, north of Incline Village and Lake Tahoe, and
is nicknamed the “Biggest Little City.” Although not a large town geographically, Reno is densely packed
with 24-hour casinos and restaurants, and is the perfect home base for those wanting both big city
amusements and close proximity to the natural wonders of the Lake Tahoe area.
